Night Photography Classes

Astrophotography has been a field in exponential evolution during the past decade. Cameras are becoming more performant and affordable by the minute. Many people decide to take a stab at photographing the night sky or the aurora when they go chasing. However they quickly realize it requires a certain set of gear and skills to achieve it.  

 

That's why we offer a comprehensive two-hour indoor class for both beginners and more advanced photographers. The goal is to give you a visual and didactic understanding of how your camera works, what other gear to use, how to plan your shots, how to set it up for night photography and finally some great tips to take extra sharp, stunning astrophotographs. 

  • With whom?

Night Lights' photographer Adrien Mauduit is also an experienced aurora chaser with almost 10 years of expertise in many countries like the USA, Canada, Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Finland. He is a specialist in aurora chasing and received advanced training in the field of Space Weather. Needless to say you will be in some of the best hands in this field!

  • Where and when?

This tour can be taken alone or in addition to any of our other activities during the aurora season around the Tromsø area (September 1st - April 10th). You can see when we dispense this activity when you book. It takes place around the Tromsø area island but we will conven

  • How?

The class consists of a two-hour interactive projected presentation. The slides will be sent to all participant on email at the end of the class. Snacks and refreshment will be provided. Also, remember to bring ALL your photography gear (Camera, wide angle lens(es), sturdy tripod, batteries, SD card, shutter remote (not indispensable). Some gear can be rented out at our headquarters (mostly lenses, tripods).

  • What?

The lecture includes several parts. We expand camera basics for both day and night time, the gear to use for night photography, how to plan your shot, the objectives of an astrophotograph, how to both adjust the camera's menu but also external settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed). We also learn about how to focus at night, how to take pictures in specific situations (milky way, aurora, moon...), and wrap up with an introduction to post-processing using softwares like Adobe Lr. 

All of the information is smartly connected together and offers you a comprehensive yet easy-to-understand insight on astrophotography. You will be provided with some of the best explanation in the field to grasp the phenomenon! 

  • Practical

The physical lecture costs NOK 1500 with a NOK 300 non-refundable, online deposit upon booking. The rest is paid in person upon attending (all major credit cards accepted). By proceeding with the booking you are accepting the terms of payment for the class.
